RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — John Daly Jr. made a notable entrance into the golf world during his PGA Tour debut by opening with a solid 2-under 70 at the Puerto Rico Open on Thursday. The young golfer, 22, seemed to have an easier experience than his father, legendary golfer John Daly, who famously struggled at his first-ever PGA Tour-sanctioned event nearly 40 years ago, shooting an 88 at the 1986 U.S. Open.

While Daly Jr. showed promise in his initial round, it was Chandler Blanchet who captured the spotlight with an impressive performance, finishing his round at 8-under 64. Despite bogeying his very first hole, Blanchet rallied to secure nine birdies throughout the day, landing him a one-shot lead over Gordon Sargent, a former top collegiate golfer facing challenges in recent years.

Daly Jr. expressed satisfaction with his round, noting that while he felt he left some shots on the table, he made significant saves and even a chip-in on the 16th hole. “It was good,” he said.

The tournament featured a gathering of talented young players; among them was Blades Brown, an 18-year-old who previously played alongside Scottie Scheffler when Scheffler claimed victory at The American Express. Brown opened with a strong 69, marking his 16th round in the 60s out of 34 career rounds on the PGA Tour. Other young contenders included 17-year-old Miles Russell from Florida, who shot a 71, and China’s Zhou Yanhan, who recorded a 72 after an impressive year with seven wins on the China Tour.

Blanchet’s performance is particularly noteworthy, as he earned his PGA Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour last year, where he won twice, including the Tour Championship. Although he has faced challenges in the early stages of his debut season—missing the cut in each of his first five tournaments—he remains optimistic and focused on improvement. “I missed a 5-footer right on the first hole… This is our test,’” Blanchet recounted, emphasizing his determination to grow mentally stronger from these experiences.

Another player making headlines was Eugenio Chacarra, the first golfer from the LIV Golf league to receive a sponsor exemption for the PGA Tour, who opened his round with a score of 73.

The eventual winner of the Puerto Rico Open will gain entry into the prestigious Players Championship and the PGA Championship, along with a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour, though they will not qualify for the Masters. With young talent showcasing their skills and gaining experience at this tournament, the future of golf looks bright.
