Chris Candy, son of the late comedy legend John Candy, shared his reflections on the recently released documentary, “John Candy: I Like Me,” revealing insights that deepened his understanding of his father’s life. The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on October 10.

Chris attended a special screening of the film on October 8 in Brooklyn, New York, where he joined director Colin Hanks, producer Ryan Reynolds, and actor Hugh Jackman for a discussion afterward. Reflecting on the film, Chris expressed surprise at how interviewers often approached his father about his weight. “I was kind of shocked to see how interviewers treat him,” Chris noted, highlighting the heart-wrenching nature of those interactions. He recounted his father’s struggles with eating in public due to the scrutiny of paparazzi, a reality that led to disordered eating habits.

The documentary weaves together archival footage and interviews with some of Candy’s notable colleagues, including Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, and Bill Murray, capturing his influential role in the world of comedy. Chris remarked on the profound connection between his experiences and his father’s, both having lost their dads at a young age. He reflected on their shared struggles and hopes that his father, if he were alive today, might have embraced himself more openly.

While acknowledging that John may have felt uncomfortable with the documentary, Chris expressed optimism that time could have fostered a greater self-acceptance. “I would hope though, the John Candy of 2025, he would’ve worked on himself enough to be okay with himself,” he said.

The story of John Candy continues to resonate, showcasing both his talent and the personal challenges he faced. “John Candy: I Like Me” not only honors his legacy but also serves as a poignant reminder of the pressures faced by public figures, highlighting the deep emotional threads that connect us all. The film stands as a testament to the lasting impact of Candy’s humor and spirit on future generations of comedians, reaffirming his place in entertainment history.
