Tony Award-winning actor, writer, and director John Cameron Mitchell is set to make his return to Broadway this winter in the acclaimed play Oh, Mary! for a special limited engagement of 12 weeks. Mitchell, celebrated for his pioneering work in the 1998 musical and subsequent film Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will portray Mary Todd Lincoln, beginning February 3, 2026, and running until April 26.
This marks Mitchell’s first Broadway appearance in a decade, following his Tony-winning revival of Hedwig. Expressing his excitement about the role, the 62-year-old Mitchell shared, “Cole Escola and Sam Pinkleton are the wild horses that dragged me back to drag, and I couldn’t be happier! As the most mature Mary yet, my days are filled with working the StairMaster™, mainlining Ozempic®, and mastering my Brilliant Dialogue©. ‘Line?!’”
Director Sam Pinkleton, who received a Tony Award in 2025 for his work on this production, noted that bringing Mitchell into the cast “feels both delicious and somehow inevitable.” He emphasized the influence Mitchell’s work has had on live performance, stating, “He’s a queer trailblazer, cultural icon, brilliant actor — and, most importantly for his new role, a giant idiot.”
Mitchell joins a stellar ensemble that has played the spirited role of Mary, which includes Tony Award-winning creator Cole Escola, and Jane Krakowski, who concludes her run on January 4, 2026. Other notable performers include Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin, Hannah Solow, and Jinkx Monsoon, a two-time winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, who will return to the role on January 8.
Oh, Mary! made its Broadway debut at the Lyceum Theatre on July 11, 2024, making history as the first production in the venue’s 121-year history to exceed $1 million in a single week. The comedy has consistently broken its own box office records, achieving this milestone 12 times and becoming the first show of the 2024-25 Broadway season to recoup its investment.
Tickets for Oh, Mary! are currently on sale, promising an exciting theatrical experience that continues to capture the hearts of audiences.
