Joey King, the star of the movie adaptation of “Uglies,” was quick to express her admiration for director McG, likening their collaboration to her role in bringing the “Charlie’s Angels” films to life with Drew Barrymore.
Now available on Netflix, “Uglies” is based on Scott Westerfeld’s popular 2005 novel. It is set in a futuristic society where inhabitants undergo a surgery at age 16 to achieve perfection in appearance, personality, and abilities, transforming them into what are called “pretties.” Before this transformation, they are referred to as “uglies” and live separately from the pretties in a compound across a bridge. King portrays Tally Youngblood, a girl eager to become pretty, until she discovers that the surgery might have unforeseen consequences.
In addition to her acting role, King also serves as an executive producer for the film. According to McG, her determination to have him as the director was reminiscent of Barrymore’s support in his earlier projects. He shared his experience with TheWrap, stating, “Drew was very powerful,” and similar to Barrymore, King expressed that he was the right choice for the film by establishing a strong connection during their discussions.
McG commended King for her bravery and dedication, highlighting her commitment while performing many of her own stunts, including scenes filmed in a real burning field and hanging from a helicopter alongside co-star Brianne Tju. “I couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Joey King,” he remarked, praising her talent and collaborative spirit on set.
“Uglies” can now be streamed on Netflix.
