The life and legacy of Joeli Veitayaki, the former Flying Fijian rugby star, were honored during a touching memorial service at the Nausori Methodist Church yesterday. Veitayaki, who passed away at the age of 58 on October 21 in New Zealand, is fondly remembered as a pivotal figure in Fijian rugby and as a source of inspiration for many.
Family, friends, and former teammates gathered to celebrate his life, sharing heartfelt eulogies that highlighted his impact on the sport and on those around him. Notable speakers included his brother, Sepesa Vueti, representatives from the Nuku Rugby Club, St Marist Rugby Club, Police Rugby Club, Suva Rugby Union, and the Fiji Rugby Union. In a moving tribute, Veitayaki’s daughter, Marilyn Nawalowalo, reflected on her father’s profound influence and the cherished memories they hold.
Rugby administrator Paula Biu expressed the sentiments of Suva Rugby, while Sale Sorovaki, operations manager of the Fiji Rugby Union, lauded Veitayaki’s remarkable career that took him from local competitions to the international rugby stage. After the service, attendees engaged in a communal lunch at the Vunivivi Government Quarters Church Hall, further celebrating the impactful life of Veitayaki.
Veitayaki’s rugby career spanned from 1994 to 2003, during which he earned 49 caps for Fiji, participating in all four Rugby World Cups. His journey included playing in Super Rugby with prominent teams like the Chiefs and the Blues, exemplifying his dedication and skill in the sport.
This memorial reflects a similar sentiment previously exhibited in the rugby community following the losses of legends such as Josaia Raisuqe and Ilaitia Tuisese, both of whom left indelible marks on the game. Veitayaki’s legacy will continue to inspire and teach current and future generations of athletes about the importance of dedication and cultural pride.
As the rugby community comes together to mourn, a strong sense of hope and resilience pervades, showcasing the powerful bonds that sports forge among individuals. Celebrating Veitayaki’s contributions to rugby and his community serves as a lasting testament to his character and spirit.
