The life and contributions of the late Joeli Veitayaki, the former Flying Fijian rugby star, were commemorated during a heartfelt memorial service held at the Nausori Methodist Church yesterday. Veitayaki, who passed away at the age of 58 on October 21 in New Zealand, is remembered as a significant figure in the Fijian rugby community and a source of inspiration to many.
The service brought together family, friends, and former rugby teammates who shared eulogies celebrating his legacy. Speeches were delivered by various representatives from the vanua, including Veitayaki’s brother, Sepesa Vueti, as well as members from the Nuku Rugby Club, St Marist Rugby Club, Police Rugby Club, Suva Rugby Union, and Fiji Rugby Union. His daughter, Marilyn Nawalowalo, spoke on behalf of the family, sharing memories and the profound impact their father had on their lives.
Rugby administrator Paula Biu articulated Suva Rugby’s sentiments, while Sale Sorovaki, the operations manager of the Fiji Rugby Union, also paid tribute, reflecting on Veitayaki’s remarkable journey from local competitions to international acclaim. Following the service, a communal lunch was offered at Vunivivi Government Quarters Church Hall, where attendees gathered to remember and celebrate Veitayaki’s life.
Veitayaki’s rugby career spanned from 1994 to 2003 during which he proudly wore the national jersey, achieving 49 caps for Fiji and participating in all four Rugby World Cups. His journey from local rugby to the international stage, including stints in Super Rugby with teams like the Chiefs and the Blues, showcased his resilience and skill within the sport.
This service echoes a similar outpouring of grief and support witnessed previously in the community following the passing of other rugby legends, such as Josaia Raisuqe and Ilaitia Tuisese, who also left deep marks on the sport. Like them, Veitayaki’s legacy continues to inspire, reminding current and future generations of athletes about the values of dedication and cultural pride.
As the rugby community unites in mourning, there remains a palpable sense of hope and resilience, underscoring the shared bonds that sport creates among people. Veitayaki’s contributions to rugby and his community are celebrated as a lasting testament to his character and spirit.
