Joeli Qio’s remarkable dedication to rugby refereeing was honored at the Fiji Rugby Referees Awards last Saturday, where he received the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award. Qio, who currently serves as the president of the Lautoka Rugby Referees Association, expressed his heartfelt surprise and appreciation upon hearing his name announced by Geoffrey Smith, the director of external affairs and community engagement for FIJI Water.

“I was lost for words. I didn’t believe that this award would be meant for me, but I dedicate the award to my fellow members,” Qio stated, reflecting on the accolade he received after nearly two decades of service.

Qio began his refereeing career in 2006, motivated by a desire to enhance the officiating standards he observed among older referees who were not meeting the expectations of players. This realization prompted him to shift from being a player to an official. “I wanted to make things fair for the teams that dedicate their time to the sport,” he explained.

As he nears the 20-year milestone in his refereeing journey, Qio considers the sharing of his knowledge as one of the most rewarding aspects of his career. He proudly cited the accomplishments of Lavenia Racaca, an international referee he has mentored, who recently officiated at the HSBC SVNS and the Olympic Games in France. “Even though I never reached there, I did something for someone to reach that level,” he remarked, highlighting his role in fostering talent.

Beyond individual mentorship, Qio is dedicated to coaching aspiring young referees within his association. He emphasizes essential skills such as fitness, game knowledge, positioning, and proper running lines. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of referees not only showcases his passion for the sport but also promises a encouraging future for rugby in Fiji. This legacy sets a strong foundation that can inspire many more to follow in his footsteps, ultimately contributing to the growth and development of rugby in the region.
