Joby Aviation, Inc., a California-based company focused on developing electric air taxis, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing piloted vertical-takeoff-and-landing flights in Dubai. This accomplishment marks the initiation of the company’s efforts to prepare for commercial market readiness in the region, as it aims to launch passenger services in 2026.
The flights were overseen by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, emphasizing the city’s commitment to advancing air mobility. Joby is working in collaboration with local authorities, including the Roads and Transport Authority and the General Civil Aviation Authority, to pave the way for air taxi operations. The company secured a landmark agreement in 2024, granting it exclusive rights to operate air taxis in Dubai for six years.
Joby plans to operate routes from Dubai International Airport to key locations such as Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina, aiming to significantly reduce travel time. For instance, the journey from DXB to Palm Jumeirah is expected to take just 12 minutes compared to a typical 45-minute car ride. The aircraft, designed to carry a pilot plus four passengers, can reach speeds of up to 200 mph while maintaining minimal noise and zero emissions.
Construction is already underway for Joby’s first commercial vertiport at Dubai International Airport, with completion targeted for the first quarter of 2026. This infrastructure development is essential for the integration of air taxis into Dubai’s public transportation network, which will enhance connectivity and provide a new premium travel option for residents and visitors alike.
Throughout its development, Joby Aviation has conducted extensive flight testing, accumulating over 40,000 miles and ensuring the readiness of its aircraft for urban air mobility. CEO JoeBen Bevirt expressed optimism about the future, highlighting the ambitious goal of making quiet, clean air travel a common mode of transportation.
This achievement not only positions Joby as a pioneer in the eVTOL market but also showcases Dubai’s role as a leader in innovative transportation solutions, reflecting a future-oriented approach to addressing urban mobility challenges. The ongoing partnership with local government and the commitment to sustainable travel solutions offer a promising vision for transforming how people navigate the city.
