Joann Fabrics is set to close over 500 of its store locations across the United States as part of its bankruptcy proceedings. The company filed a motion in bankruptcy court requesting the closure of approximately 533 out of its 800 stores, with a hearing scheduled for approval on February 14.
Among the affected locations, 12 stores in Minnesota will be impacted. These closures include locations in Hibbing, Mankato, Woodbury, Maple Grove, Coon Rapids, Apple Valley, Elk River, Shakopee, Hutchinson, Bemidji, Willmar, and Faribault. If the court approves the motion, going-out-of-business sales are expected to commence on February 15 and may continue for several months.
Interestingly, the St. Cloud store at 3332 West Division Street is not scheduled for closure but is currently marked as “Temporarily Closed” due to maintenance issues. Reports indicate that the store’s temporary status has raised some questions, as attempts to reach the store for confirmation were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, several Minnesota locations are currently deemed safe from the closures, including stores in Alexandria, Brainerd, Minnetonka, Roseville, Edina, Maplewood, Duluth, and Rochester.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges facing retail stores in the current economic landscape, but it also underscores the resilience of some locations which appear to be weathering the storm.
In summary, Joann Fabrics is facing significant downsizing as part of its efforts to restructure during bankruptcy, affecting store operations in multiple states. While some stores will close permanently, others may remain operational, providing a glimmer of hope for the communities they serve.
