JMU Women’s Tennis Rises in Rankings: A Season of Resilience and Triumph

The James Madison women’s tennis team has made a significant mark in the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Atlantic Region rankings, achieving a sixth-place finish. This ranking is particularly notable as it marks the first time in two years that the team has secured a spot in the region’s top 10, having previously finished fifth in 2023.

Individually, Munteanu stood out by finishing the year ranked 16th in singles, mirroring her performance from the previous year. Additionally, the doubles pair of Oliveira and Williams made an impressive entrance into the rankings, coming in at ninth overall. This is a notable achievement for the JMU program, as it is the first time since 2021 that doubles players have reached the top 10 in the Atlantic region.

Throughout the 2025 spring season, the Dukes faced a rigorous schedule but managed to record a 10-13 overall mark and an impressive 7-4 record in Sun Belt Conference play. Their efforts landed them in fifth place in the league standings and secured a spot in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship for the second time in three years.

Munteanu’s performance was particularly commendable. She finished the season with a 17-13 singles record, including a strong start in the fall with a seven-match winning streak and a round of 16 finish at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship. During the spring, she recorded a 4-6 record on court one and 4-4 on court two, tying for the team lead with eight dual wins. Meanwhile, Oliveira and Williams showcased their skills by breaking into the ITA national doubles rankings at #40 and going on to defeat the former number one team in the nation, an impressive feat that underscores their potential for further success.

This year’s achievements reflect the resilience and talent within the James Madison women’s tennis program, adding to the hopeful prospect for future seasons. With the team continuing to improve and individual players excelling, there is optimism about what lies ahead for the Dukes in collegiate tennis.
