Jinkx Monsoon has been announced as the new Mary Todd Lincoln in the acclaimed Broadway play “Oh, Mary!”, a production created by Cole Escola and directed by Sam Pinkleton. Starting her eight-week engagement on August 4, Monsoon is celebrated for her dynamic presence on stage and her success on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
During a recent appearance on “The Today Show,” Monsoon enthusiastically confirmed her role, stating, “Oh, Mary! has been the show on everyone’s lips.” She clarified her schedule, indicating that she will conclude her performance in “Pirates of Penzance” before stepping into the new role, cheekily mentioning, “I’m a witch, baby. I find ways.”
Monsoon expressed her gratitude for being able to occupy this significant role as a trans feminine actress, stating, “I was convinced this wasn’t possible… I thought I had to choose to be an actor or choose to be a trans person, but I didn’t think the world was gonna let me be both.” She pointed out that the Broadway landscape has transformed in ways that welcomed her and other trans artists, making theater more inclusive and diverse.
She acknowledged the inspiring figures before her, such as Angela Ross, Laverne Cox, and Peppermint, stating, “These people paved the way for me to be here, and I want to do the same for others.” Monsoon’s sentiments reflect a hopeful vision for future generations of performers.
