Jimmy Kimmel delivered an emotional tribute to his childhood best friend and long-time bandleader, Cleto Escobedo III, during what he described as the most challenging opening monologue of his career on Tuesday night. Kimmel broke down in tears as he recounted his memories of Escobedo, who passed away early that morning at the age of 59.

During the heartfelt segment, Kimmel reflected on their nearly lifelong friendship, which began in 1977 when Kimmel’s family relocated from Brooklyn to Las Vegas. They lived just a few houses apart, and their bond quickly developed as they spent countless nights at each other’s homes, with Kimmel recalling one stretch in which he stayed at Escobedo’s house for 33 consecutive nights.

Kimmel highlighted Escobedo’s exceptional talent as a saxophonist from a young age, a gift that he inherited from his father, Cleto Escobedo II, who was also a musician in Kimmel’s own band, “Cleto and the Cletones.” The late-night host shared that Escobedo was considered a child prodigy, receiving standing ovations while still in junior high. He noted that Escobedo had experienced an impressive career that included playing alongside famous artists like Paula Abdul and Marc Anthony.

In 2002, when Kimmel launched his talk show, he felt it was essential to have his childhood friend as the bandleader. The father-son duo successfully auditioned, and “Cleto and the Cletones” became a staple of the show for nearly 23 years. Kimmel expressed immense pride in giving Escobedo Senior the opportunity to return to music after decades while working alongside his son.

During the tribute, Kimmel also introduced Escobedo’s mother, Sylvia, who was present in the audience. He expressed how both Escobedo Senior and Sylvia had in many ways become second parents to him. As he struggled to maintain his composure, Kimmel conveyed the deep sense of loss felt by everyone associated with the show. He paid homage to Cleto’s spirit, recalling the joy and friendship they shared, emphasizing how fortunate he felt to have had Escobedo by his side for so many years.

While the precise cause of death has not been disclosed, reports indicate that Escobedo had previously faced complications following a liver transplant. This devastating loss leaves not only Kimmel but also the entire community saddened, as they honor the legacy of a remarkable musician and a beloved friend.
