Jets Unleash Coaching Shakeup: Robert Saleh Out, Ulbrich In!

The New York Jets have parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh. The news was initially reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday, shortly after the Jets lost 23-17 to the Minnesota Vikings in London. The team has since confirmed the firing.

Jeff Ulbrich, the team’s defensive coordinator since Saleh’s arrival in 2021, has been appointed as the interim head coach. The 47-year-old Ulbrich has been recognized for his toughness and command over the players and coaching staff.

Jet owner Woody Johnson released a statement confirming the decision, expressing gratitude to Saleh for his efforts over the past three and a half years. He emphasized that the team did not meet expectations and that now was the right moment to change direction. Johnson expressed confidence in Ulbrich’s ability to lead the talented roster towards achieving their goals.

During his tenure, Saleh recorded a 20-36 record, failing to produce a winning season. This year, the Jets hold a 2-3 record and are currently one game behind the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East standings, with a crucial matchup against them scheduled for Monday Night Football in six days.

Although Saleh had one year remaining on his contract, the Jets organization felt it necessary to make a coaching change following consecutive losses and underwhelming performances since Aaron Rodgers joined the team. Rodgers, who is 40 years old, has thrown seven touchdowns and four interceptions this season, posting the lowest passer rating of his starting career at 81.6.

Despite having a top-five defense in terms of yardage over several seasons, the Jets struggled to resolve their quarterback dilemma under Saleh, utilizing six different quarterbacks during his 56-game tenure: Zach Wilson, Mike White, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Trevor Siemian, and Tim Boyle.

Following their game against the Bills, the Jets will travel for a Sunday Night Football matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
