Jets Trim Six Ahead of 53-Man Roster Cut Deadline

The Jets waived six players on Saturday as they press toward finalizing the 53-man roster ahead of the deadline.

The group of cut players includes cornerback Mario Goodrich, tackle Samuel Jackson, tight end Neal Johnson, wide receivers Dymere Miller and Ontaria “Pokey” Wilson, and defensive tackle Fatorma Mullbah.

Miller and Wilson were the standout candidates who didn’t manage to secure spots in the wide receiver rotation this season. Miller, a Rutgers product, posted 59 receptions for 757 yards and four touchdowns last year. He joined the Jets as an undrafted free agent and appeared in the preseason, contributing two kickoff returns for 33 yards and a 24-yard reception. Wilson, a former Florida State standout who played in the CFL last year (71 receptions, 1,026 yards, three touchdowns), did not make a notable impact in the team’s preseason exhibition games.

Johnson, who signed a reserves/futures deal with the Jets in January, totaled two catches for 27 yards in the preseason.

Goodrich, a Clemson product in his second year, was claimed off waivers from the Broncos in early August and recorded eight tackles in the preseason. Mullbah contributed three tackles this summer after posting 75 total tackles over 26 games at West Virginia before joining the Jets in May.

Jackson, a first-year offensive lineman, will now seek a new landing spot after playing with the Houston Roughnecks of the UFL last season.

The deadline to reduce rosters to 53 players is Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m. ET. After cuts, the Jets will have the opportunity to build out a 16-man practice squad.

What this means for the Jets going forward
– The moves create room on the roster for potential waiver claims and practice squad opportunities.
– The Jets will likely monitor the waiver wire and potential signings to fill depth at wide receiver, along the offensive line, and on the defensive front.
– The 16-player practice squad gives the organization flexibility to address injuries and develop young players through the season.

Additional context
– With the deadline looming, expect further adjustments as teams, including the Jets, finalize depth charts and look to protect players they want to keep around on the practice squad.

Summary
The Jets trimmed six players as they push toward the final rosters, clearing space for possible waiver acquisitions and upcoming practice squad moves while evaluating young talent for depth across multiple positions. The team can now focus on finalizing its 53-man roster and assembling a 16-player practice squad after Tuesday’s cut deadline.
