Jets’ Star Rusher Haason Reddick Seeks Trade Amid Contract Clash

The New York Jets’ contract dispute with Haason Reddick took a contentious turn on Monday, as the Pro Bowl edge rusher formally requested a trade. The Jets promptly responded with a firm statement, clarifying that they have no intention of accommodating his request.

General manager Joe Douglas emphasized in the statement, “We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report. Since the trade discussions back in March, we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”

Reddick’s dissatisfaction with his contract has led him to miss 21 days of training camp, resulting in a daily fine of $50,000. In total, including fines and lost bonus money from an offseason incentive, his holdout has cost him approximately $1.7 million.

This situation is particularly noteworthy as Reddick was acquired in a trade just four months ago, yet he has not practiced with the Jets even once. His only visit to the facility was for a physical and introductory press conference on April Fool’s Day.

In late March, the Jets traded a conditional third-round pick in 2026 to the Philadelphia Eagles for the two-time Pro Bowler, believing he would play under his existing contract. However, complications arose when Reddick opted out of the entire offseason, including mandatory minicamp.

Sources indicate that the Jets will not negotiate with any player unless they are present at camp, while Reddick has stated he will only report if his contract is modified. This marks his second trade request in just six months.

Currently 29 years old, Reddick is slated to earn a non-guaranteed $14.25 million in base salary, the final year of a three-year, $45 million deal he signed as a free agent with the Eagles in 2022. Reddick believes he has exceeded the expectations of his contract and is seeking a deal comparable to that of top edge rushers—factors that led to the Eagles considering him expendable in the offseason despite his strong performance.

Danielle Hunter of the Houston Texans, also 29, who has achieved the same sack production as Reddick in the past two seasons (27 sacks each), recently signed a two-year, $49 million contract in free agency, a figure Reddick may be aspiring to.

Reddick has accumulated 50.5 sacks over the last four seasons, ranking fourth in the league during that timeframe.

Following the departure of sack leader Bryce Huff to the Eagles in free agency, the Jets quickly moved to secure Reddick in a trade, part of a series of high-profile acquisitions in 2024. Interestingly, the Jets did not solidify Reddick’s contract circumstances during the trade process, although reports suggest they did propose an extension, the details of which remain unclear and likely fell short of his expectations.

The Jets later informed Reddick that they preferred to revisit contract negotiations later in the season or after the season, expressing surprise at his absence from any voluntary workouts.

As of now, neither Reddick nor his representation have issued any comments regarding the situation.

Reddick becomes the fourth player under Douglas to request a trade, joining safety Jamal Adams, wide receiver Denzel Mims, and wide receiver Elijah Moore, each of whom was ultimately traded.

With his current holdout, Reddick has accrued $1.05 million in mandatory fines for his 21 days away from training camp, as dictated by the collective bargaining agreement. According to the rules, these fines cannot be rescinded, plus he has also faced approximately $300,000 in discretionary fines tied to a CBA clause.

His absence from minicamp this spring resulted in a mandatory $100,000 fine, and he forfeited a $250,000 workout bonus due to skipping offseason programs.

The Jets are counting on Reddick, who turns 30 on September 20, to play a key role as a starting defensive end, replacing John Franklin-Myers, who was traded to the Denver Broncos. Micheal Clemons and Will McDonald have shared playing time during training camp.
