The New York Jets have made a notable late-season roster change by releasing wide receiver Allen Lazard, following the previous day’s announcement of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks being let go. This decision, as reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, was made at Lazard’s request, allowing him a chance to join a playoff contending team should he go unclaimed on waivers.

Lazard’s tenure with the Jets this season was somewhat unexpected, considering speculation around his potential as a trade or cut candidate. Nevertheless, he opted to restructure his contract back in April, lowering his 2025 base salary to $2.25 million in order to remain with the team.

This season, the 30-year-old receiver found himself underutilized in the Jets’ offense, managing only 10 catches for 70 yards and one touchdown across 10 games. His playing time dwindled significantly, as he participated in less than 30 percent of the offensive snaps during the last three games, even being a healthy scratch in Weeks 10 and 11. His snap percentage on the field has not surpassed 50 percent since Week 8.

While it may seem Lazard’s impact on a playoff roster will be limited, he brings valuable speed that could address teams’ needs for pass-catching depth. The Pittsburgh Steelers emerge as a notable destination, particularly since Lazard’s connection to quarterback Aaron Rodgers during his previous seasons with both the Jets and the Green Bay Packers might spark interest. The Steelers are in need of a strong outside weapon alongside DK Metcalf, and Lazard could fill that role, especially considering that Calvin Austin III is currently their second-best receiver in yardage at 309 yards.

Additionally, the Buffalo Bills may look to Lazard as a possible insurance option, especially after acquiring Brandin Cooks from the New Orleans Saints. The Baltimore Ravens are also a potential fit, given that Zay Flowers is their only pass-catcher exceeding 360 receiving yards at this point in the season.

Despite his challenges this year, Lazard is only a year removed from a productive season, where he tallied 530 yards and six touchdowns, suggesting he could still be a meaningful addition to teams with capable quarterback play. This change opens the door for him to potentially revitalize his career with a new franchise, just in time for the playoff season ahead.
