Jets Open Door for Reddick Trade: What’s Next for the Pass Rusher?

The New York Jets have changed their stance regarding pass rusher Haason Reddick, now allowing him to explore trade options, as confirmed by owner Woody Johnson at the NFL owners meetings in Atlanta. Initially, the Jets had denied Reddick’s trade request made on August 12. However, following a meeting between Reddick’s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and general manager Joe Douglas before the Jets’ game against the Buffalo Bills, the team has now agreed to let Reddick assess potential opportunities with other franchises.

Rosenhaus mentioned there was a “healthy dialogue” during the discussions, expressing a preference for Reddick to remain with the Jets. Reports indicate that the Jets are hopeful this move will reignite Reddick’s desire to return to the field for the team.

Johnson recently urged Reddick to rejoin the Jets and expressed optimism that Rosenhaus could help resolve the situation. He noted that Rosenhaus is skilled in navigating such challenges and implied that Reddick’s participation would benefit his career.

Reddick, 30, was acquired by the Jets on March 29 in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is in the last year of his contract and is seeking an extension to align his pay with other elite edge rushers. The Jets had not renegotiated his contract during the trade as he had indicated a willingness to play under his current terms.

Since the spring, Reddick has missed all team activities, costing himself $4.8 million in game checks and an additional $5 million due to NFL-mandated fines. If he does not report by Week 13, he will not receive credit for the season, and his contract will toll, keeping his 2025 rights with the Jets.

Securing a trade partner could be challenging as Reddick is owed $9.5 million for the remainder of the season, which is not guaranteed. He recently turned down a one-year offer from the Jets that would have exceeded his scheduled base pay of $14.25 million.

Despite the hurdles, the market for edge rushers is strong, and Reddick is recognized for his impressive record of 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons. The Jets had traded a conditional third-round pick for him with hopes of bolstering their defense for a championship run. Reddick expressed his satisfaction in joining the Jets during an introductory press conference on April 1, but since then, he has not been present with the team.
