The New York Jets are actively seeking a new offensive coordinator following their decision to part ways with Tanner Engstrand. On Wednesday, the team is scheduled to interview Lunda Wells, the tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys, for the position. This marks Wells’ third interview for an offensive coordinator role this offseason, with previous discussions also held with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders.
Wells, 42, has been an integral part of the Cowboys’ coaching staff since 2020, where he has successfully developed notable players like Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson, both fourth-round selections who emerged as key contributors for the team. His coaching background includes an extensive eight-year stint with the New York Giants from 2012 to 2019, where he served in various capacities, including tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach. He also has experience from his time at Louisiana State University, contributing as an assistant offensive line coach and assistant special teams coach.
The Jets have embarked on a broader reconstruction of their offensive coaching staff, which not only includes the departure of Engstrand but also that of pass-game coordinator Scott Turner and quarterbacks coach Charles London. In addition to their offensive needs, New York is also looking to fill several defensive coaching positions, including defensive coordinator and several assistant roles.
Wells is among a group of candidates that also include established names like Frank Reich and Jon Gruden, although it’s worth noting that Reich has not yet conducted an official interview and Gruden has declined an opportunity to join the Jets.
The current scenario presents challenges for the Jets, as their recent coaching changes may deter some high-profile candidates. The organization may need to shift its focus towards promising, lesser-known coaches like Wells to effectively bolster their coaching staff and improve their offensive capabilities. Despite the challenges ahead, this search could pave the way for fresh ideas and renewed energy within the team’s coaching framework, potentially signaling a positive turnaround for the franchise.
