The New York Jets are closing in on a trade to acquire wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders, as confirmed by CBS News New York. This potential deal will see Adams reunite with his former Green Bay Packers teammate and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
New York plans to send a conditional third-round draft pick for next year, which could turn into a second-rounder, contingent on Adams passing a physical examination. The NFL Network initially broke the news of the trade.
This transaction comes in the wake of significant changes for the Jets, following the dismissal of head coach Robert Saleh last week. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has stepped in as interim head coach, overseeing a loss to the Buffalo Bills that left the Jets with a 2-4 record.
Rodgers expressed frustration after the latest game, citing ongoing issues with penalties and missed opportunities. Amid rumors of his involvement in the coaching shake-up, Rodgers denied the claims, labeling them as “patently false.”
Adams, who has been sidelined for the last three games due to a hamstring injury, reportedly conveyed his desire to leave Las Vegas, prompting the Raiders to facilitate his exit. This trade sees him return to play alongside Rodgers, with whom he had a successful eight-season partnership at the Packers.
The Jets showed interest in Adams during last year’s trade deadline, and Rodgers had previously expressed excitement about the prospect of reuniting with his former teammate. With Adams now joining the Jets, he enhances their offense, which has struggled early in the season. The three-time All-Pro will pair with Garrett Wilson to give Rodgers two top-tier wide receivers, complementing others on the roster.
Adams’ exit from Las Vegas was anticipated as he expressed dissatisfaction, particularly after his comments on a recent Netflix documentary hinted at his frustration with the team. Despite nearing 32 years old, Adams remains a top receiver in the NFL, renowned for his precise route running and ability to make difficult catches. Last season, he recorded 103 receptions for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns, marking his fifth season with over 1,000 yards.
The Raiders had made a significant investment in Adams back in 2022 when they traded first- and second-round picks to the Packers and signed him to a five-year, $140 million contract. As part of the deal with the Jets, they will assume the remaining salary, which is expected to increase significantly in the coming years.
