The New York Jets have announced the elevation of quarterback Hendon Hooker to the active roster for Week 17, in a move aimed at boosting their offensive capabilities as the season progresses. Along with Hooker, the Jets have also signed three additional players to their active roster: wide receiver Quentin Skinner, offensive lineman Marquis Hayes, and defensive back Tre Brown.

Hendon Hooker, 27, has had an eventful journey in professional football. After transferring to Tennessee from Virginia Tech, he made a significant impact during his two seasons with the Volunteers, even becoming a frontrunner in the Heisman Trophy race in 2022 before suffering a torn ACL. This injury, unfortunately, affected his draft stock, but the Detroit Lions selected him in the third round as the 68th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. During his time with the Lions, he signed a four-year rookie contract worth $5,719,022, which included a signing bonus of $1,159,289.

Despite his potential, Hooker was released by the Lions during the final roster cuts for the 2025 season. He briefly joined the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad before being let go, eventually finding a spot with the Jets. In limited action with the Lions in 2024, Hooker played in three games, completing six of nine passes for a total of 62 yards.

The decision to elevate Hooker comes at a crucial juncture for the Jets, as they look to secure their standing in the league. Hooker’s unique skill set and experience, despite a rocky start to his professional career, could provide a fresh option for the Jets as they navigate the final weeks of the season. Fans are hopeful that his addition signals a positive turn for the team’s offense going forward.
