Jesy Nelson has shared a heartbreaking update regarding her twin daughters, revealing that they have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare genetic condition that will prevent them from ever being able to walk. The 34-year-old former Little Mix member expressed her anguish in an emotional video posted on Instagram, where she struggled to contain her tears while discussing her daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster, born in May.
In her touching message, Jesy explained that she sought medical advice after noticing the twins were not displaying typical movements for their age. Initially, she did not view this as a cause for concern, having been advised by healthcare professionals that, as premature babies, they may not meet the same milestones as other infants. However, Jesy noticed that their feeding patterns were also a concern, leading to multiple doctor visits.
After several months of appointments and evaluations, the family received the devastating diagnosis of SMA type one, a condition that affects muscle functionality throughout the body. Jesy emphasized the urgency of treatment, revealing that without it, her daughters’ life expectancy could be limited to just two years. Fortunately, they have received treatment, which Jesy is immensely grateful for, recognizing its critical role in ensuring their survival.
In her heartfelt announcement, Jesy described how her life has been dramatically altered, now functioning as a caregiver while navigating the emotional turmoil of her daughters’ condition. She admitted to feeling like a nurse soon after the diagnosis, overseeing care that no mother should have to undertake. Despite the overwhelming challenges, Jesy expressed gratitude for her daughters’ continued presence and treatment.
Reflecting on her journey, Jesy also recalled the difficulties she faced during her pregnancy, including a diagnosis of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a serious condition affecting identical twins. This required urgent intervention, leading to a complicated hospital stay before the girls were born prematurely at just 31 weeks.
