Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is reportedly exploring options for the head coaching position following the dismissal of Mike McCarthy. Jones has reached out to Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes and a former Super Bowl champion with the Cowboys, to discuss the vacancy. According to CBS Sports’ NFL insider Jonathan Jones, while no formal interview has been scheduled yet, the two are expected to maintain communication regarding the opportunity.
Sanders expressed his admiration for Jones, stating, “To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing.” However, he also highlighted his commitment to the Colorado program, appreciating the support from the team, coaches, student body, and community in Boulder.
Having been part of the last Cowboys team that won a Super Bowl in 1995, Sanders remains a significant figure in Dallas’ history. He garnered multiple accolades during his tenure, including Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections over five seasons. Additionally, Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who served as Sanders’ defensive backs coach during his time in Dallas, commented on their strong friendship but stressed that Sanders has previously stated he is happy in Colorado.
Although Sanders has expressed his desire to coach only if it involves his sons, particularly quarterback Shedeur Sanders—who is anticipated to be a top prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft—this condition presents a challenge. Given that the Cowboys hold the 12th pick in that draft, it seems unlikely they would be in position to select Shedeur.
In the larger context, while it may be tempting for Jones to bring a legendary figure like Sanders into the fold, the realities surrounding both Sanders’ commitments and the Cowboys’ cap situation complicate such a move. Nevertheless, engaging in discussions with Sanders could open doors for future collaborations or insights, even if he doesn’t ultimately take on the head coaching role.
This situation encapsulates the allure of the Cowboys’ storied past while also highlighting the challenges of the present, illustrating that while nostalgia can inspire, it must also align with today’s realities.
