Jerrick Gibson Leaves Texas Longhorns, Seeks Next Opportunity

Texas running back Jerrick Gibson has left the program, as reported on Tuesday by Inside Texas. The talented athlete had been a notable player, initially ranked as the No. 12 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite list during his recruitment in March 2022. The 5-foot-10, 206-pound player from Gainesville has a significant football background, including a previous commitment to the University of Florida prior to Dan Mullen’s departure as head coach in November 2021.

Gibson made the decision to commit to Texas on June 24, 2023, and was recognized as one of the premier running backs in the Class of 2024, finishing his high school career ranked as the No. 117 player overall and the No. 9 running back in the nation by 247Sports Composite rankings. During his time at Texas, he recorded 152 rushing yards on 37 carries and scored one touchdown this season. As a freshman, he showcased his potential with an average of nearly 5 yards per carry, culminating in 377 rushing yards and four touchdowns, although he did not register any receptions this season before his departure.

Gibson’s high school career was marked by his tenure at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he transferred for his junior year in 2022, after starting at Gainesville High School in 2020 and spending his sophomore year at Mundy’s Mill High School in Jonesboro, Georgia. With his exit from the Texas program, Gibson is now looking for the next opportunity to continue his collegiate career elsewhere after a season and a half with the Longhorns. This move reflects the competitive nature of collegiate football, where athletes often seek the best fit for their athletic and academic futures.
