Allegations have emerged regarding JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate for Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, as social media influencer Matt Bernstein has shared what he claims are past photos of Vance in drag. Bernstein posted the images on Instagram, asserting that one photo was taken while Vance attended Yale Law School. A representative for Vance did not deny the authenticity of the photos when contacted by The Daily Beast and chose not to comment further.
In his Instagram stories, Bernstein expressed, “I’ve obtained a photo of JD Vance in drag while at Yale Law School,” and added a caption noting the “eyeliner origin story.” He also tagged Vance directly in the post.
Bernstein later provided insights into how the alleged photo came to be public. He indicated that it was shared with him by a mutual connection, although the original photographer wished to remain anonymous. He noted that Travis Whitfill, a fellow student of Vance at Yale, has claimed ownership of the photograph.
The commentary surrounding the photos raises questions about the contrast between Vance’s documented past and his current stance on anti-drag and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Bernstein remarked that the enjoyment of drag is a common experience, particularly among men in relaxed settings. He criticized the political motivations behind anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, stating that it is unnatural to oppose self-expression.
As the upcoming election approaches, Bernstein has voiced concerns about the state of queer rights under potential Trump and Vance leadership. He urges his followers to recognize the implications of the current political climate, fearing that conditions could worsen for the LGBTQ+ community.
In a lighter note, Bernstein humorously critiqued Vance’s hypothetical performance on “Drag Race,” suggesting that it would fall short. Following the initial post, Bernstein shared a second alleged image of Vance in drag, continuing to highlight the lack of denial from Vance’s spokesperson regarding the authenticity of the photos.
