JCPS Budget Shortfall Prompts Community Forums on Closures, Consolidations, and Potential Layoffs

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is preparing for significant changes as it seeks community input on a proposal aimed at addressing a substantial budget shortfall estimated in the millions. The first of several community forums will be held on Monday, December 1, at Kammerer Middle School, giving families the opportunity to voice their opinions on the district’s recommendations, which include school closures and consolidations.

The proposed plan suggests the closure of two schools and the relocation or consolidation of additional facilities, driven by concerns over low student enrollment and associated operational costs. In total, hundreds of students and approximately 165 teachers and staff members would be affected, potentially leading to savings of around $4 million for the district in the initial phase.

JCPS Superintendent Brian Yearwood emphasized the importance of community feedback during a news conference on November 21, where he outlined the district’s efforts to explore further revenue opportunities, such as the potential sale of unused buildings. However, he noted that these processes take time. Additionally, there may be further cuts to the district’s central office in an attempt to stabilize the budget.

The community forums are scheduled as follows:
– Monday, December 1, from 5–6 p.m. at Kammerer Middle School
– Tuesday, December 2, from 5–6 p.m. at the JCPS Center for Professional Learning
– Wednesday, December 3, from 5–6 p.m. at Academy @ Shawnee

The JCPS Board of Education is set to cast a final vote on the proposal on December 9. Should the proposal be approved, the district could face layoffs, a possibility Yearwood has not shied away from discussing. He also expressed hopes to minimize further closures and consolidations in the future, striving for solutions that will best serve the community.

As JCPS engages with families and stakeholders, the dialogue presents an opportunity for collective input that could shape the future of education in the community, emphasizing the importance of collaboration as the district navigates financial challenges.
