A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture on Monday night, prompting initial tsunami warnings. The quake occurred at approximately 9:19 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located a few miles offshore at a depth of about 19 miles. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the tremor had a magnitude of 6.8, while the Japan Meteorological Agency noted it reached an intensity of lower 5 on their scale.

In response to the quake, a tsunami advisory was issued for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures, estimating wave heights could reach around 1 meter. One tsunami wave, measuring about 8 inches, was recorded on some shores by 10 p.m. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and stay away from coastal areas and waterways, including advising some residents in Kochi to evacuate.

An hour after the earthquake, Japanese weather officials were still collecting information on any disruptions caused. Though some train services experienced disruptions, there have been no reports of significant damage, and regional nuclear power plants showed no abnormalities in radiation levels or operations.

Officials continue to warn residents about the possibility of aftershocks and advise them to stay in safe locations, being cautious of potential hazards such as broken glass and debris.

In light of this incident, it is reassuring to note that, as of now, significant casualties or damage have not been reported, showcasing the resilience and preparedness of Japan in the face of natural disasters.
