Japan and Fiji have expressed serious concerns about the rising militarization in the Asia-Pacific region, a situation they believe threatens regional peace and stability. This warning was made during discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Tokyo, where the two leaders formally established the Japan–Fiji Lomavata Kizuna Partnership. This initiative aims to bolster both bilateral and regional cooperation.
In a joint statement issued by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there was a strong mutual commitment to fostering “a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Asia-Pacific region.” Both leaders voiced their worries about the rapid military expansion by certain nations, describing it as a potential obstacle to these objectives. They advocated for a strategy centered on “proactive, responsible, and transparent engagement” to safeguard regional peace and security, emphasizing the need for cooperation and dialogue rather than confrontation.
Takaichi and Rabuka also reinforced their support for a “free, open, and sustainable maritime order” that aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Their statement strongly opposes any unilateral attempts to change the status quo through force or coercion, reflecting heightened regional concerns about the increasing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific area.
