The first full work and school week of the New Year kicks off with typical cold weather expected for early January, as afternoon high temperatures hover around the mid-40s.

Monday morning will be the coldest of the week, with temperatures starting in the 20s but expected to rise above freezing by mid-morning. Parents are advised to ensure that children are dressed warmly while waiting for the school bus, as a slight breeze in the afternoon may add to the chill in the air.

Despite the cloud cover, dry conditions are predicted for the entire day. Notably, the sun now sets after 5 p.m., signaling a gradual increase in daylight. Since the winter solstice on December 21st, there has been a gain of 7 minutes of daylight, and by the end of January, sunset will shift closer to 5:30 p.m., with sunrises occurring earlier in the 7 a.m. hour.

Overnight temperatures won’t be as low, with Tuesday mornings expected to rise into the 30s, leading to a slight warm-up with expected highs near 50 degrees later in the day. The First Alert Weather team is also monitoring a significant warm-up by midweek, projecting highs in the low 60s for Wednesday.

However, there is a chance of wet weather returning by Friday and Saturday, as another weather system approaches. This pattern suggests an interesting transition from cold to more mild conditions in the coming weeks, giving hope for more pleasant weather.
