Jamie Foxx is opening up about his harrowing near-death experience in his latest comedy special, “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was,” now available on Netflix. The actor’s struggles began in April 2023 while he was on location for a film in Atlanta, where he faced a medical emergency that led to his hospitalization. Initially, his daughter Corinne announced on social media that he had encountered a serious health complication.
Reflecting on that difficult time, Foxx shared that he suffered a brain bleed resulting in a stroke, which left him in a coma for 20 days. His condition was critical enough that family members gathered at his bedside during this period, while they worked to maintain privacy regarding his health status. Foxx emphasized the gravity of his experience, stating, “I went to hell and back.”
Upon awakening from the coma, Foxx faced the daunting challenge of recovery. He found himself in a wheelchair, needing to relearn basic functions such as walking and self-care. While doctors assured him that recovery was on the table, they cautioned that the journey would be arduous.
Highlighting his impressive recovery during the special, Foxx showcased his skills by singing, dancing, and playing the piano. He attributed his healing journey to the unwavering support of his family and his faith.
Gayle King, co-host of “CBS Mornings,” was present at one of the special’s three tapings and noted that Foxx was in great spirits. She praised the actor for controlling the narrative of his story, as he had kept fans and attendees in suspense regarding the details of his health scare.
This narrative is one of resilience and strength, showcasing how Foxx has overcome significant adversity. His ability to take such life-altering experiences and share them with humor and grace serves as an inspiration to many, illustrating that even in the face of tremendous challenges, recovery and positivity are possible.
