Jamie Foxx has opened up about his harrowing near-death experience during his new comedy special “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was,” which recently premiered on Netflix. In April 2023, while filming in Atlanta, Foxx was hospitalized due to a serious medical complication, as noted by his daughter Corinne, who spoke about the situation on social media.
Foxx revealed he suffered a brain bleed that resulted in a stroke, leaving him in a coma for 20 days. This period was so severe that his family felt the need to gather at his bedside. “I went to hell and back,” he stated, highlighting the gravity of his condition.
When Foxx finally woke from his coma, he faced several challenges; he found himself in a wheelchair and had to relearn fundamental skills, including walking. Despite the difficulties, doctors assured him that recovery was possible but would be arduous. However, Foxx showcased remarkable progress during the special, demonstrating his recovery by singing, dancing, and playing the piano. He attributed his healing journey to the support of his family and his faith.
Gayle King, co-host of “CBS Mornings,” attended one of the special’s tapings in Atlanta and noted that Foxx was “in fine form,” expressing her relief at the opportunity for him to share his story on his own terms.
Foxx’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and the human spirit’s capacity to overcome adversity. His current health and ability to perform again inspire hope and exemplify that recovery, while challenging, is indeed possible with the right support and determination.
