Jamie Foxx has shared that he experienced a stroke in 2023, which he described during a recent Netflix special, “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…”. The actor recounted how he had a severe headache one day and asked for an aspirin. However, he blacked out and lost consciousness for 20 days. At that time, his family only disclosed that he had suffered a “medical complication.”
In an emotional reflection recorded in Atlanta, where his health crisis occurred, Foxx detailed how he was initially sent home after receiving a cortisone injection. Concerned about his condition, his sister drove him to Piedmont Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a brain bleed that resulted in a stroke. He recalled a doctor saying it was critical to perform emergency surgery to save his life. Although the source of the brain bleed could not be determined, Foxx’s sister prayed for him throughout the operation. He later described his experience in the aftermath, noting that instead of a typical near-death experience, he endured a strangely peaceful moment, visualizing a tunnel without a bright light.
Foxx praised his sister, Deidra Dixon, and daughter, Corinne, for protecting him and keeping his condition private until he felt ready to share. He mentioned waking up in a wheelchair on May 4, 2023, without remembering the circumstances of his condition, and struggled with denial about his health crisis, stating, “Jamie Foxx don’t get strokes.” Following his hospitalization, he underwent rehabilitation in Chicago after falling ill while filming the Netflix movie “Back In Action” with Cameron Diaz.
In discussing the signs of a stroke, awareness is crucial. Common symptoms can include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arms, or legs, confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech, vision problems, and difficulty walking or maintaining balance. Prompt medical attention can significantly impact recovery outcomes.
Jamie Foxx’s journey can serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of health awareness and the resilience of the human spirit. His openness about his experience may encourage others to prioritize their health and support their loved ones in times of crisis.
