James Pickens Jr., renowned for his role as Dr. Richard Webber on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has revealed that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. This announcement comes at a poignant moment, as his character is also navigating a similar health issue on the show.
The 73-year-old actor shared his diagnosis in an interview with Black Health Matters, expressing that while such news is never easy, it was somewhat expected given his family history with the disease. “Prostate cancer has run through my family,” he stated. “My father had it, and several of his brothers did as well. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it.” Notably, he added that the men in his family have battled and survived their conditions, including a 90-year-old cousin who has also had prostate cancer.
Pickens has been a constant presence on “Grey’s Anatomy” since its inception, and during the show’s recent fall finale, his character shared a cancer diagnosis with Dr. Miranda Bailey, played by Chandra Wilson.
Earlier this year, Pickens discovered he had a tumor on his prostate during a routine check-up, attributing the early detection to his longstanding commitment to regular physical exams and PSA testing. “I started getting my annual physical 34 years ago, and I started my PSA testing when I was 41. I’m 73 now,” he explained, noting that his urologist credited his diligence for catching the cancer early.
Upon diagnosis, Pickens decided to undergo a prostatectomy, which involves the surgical removal of the prostate gland. Fortunately, the tumor had not spread beyond the prostate, allowing for this proactive approach. He acknowledged that he has a rare variant of prostate cancer, which his medical team is closely monitoring.
Pickens’ story serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of regular health screenings, particularly in individuals with a family history of prostate cancer. His experience not only sheds light on the personal ramifications of the disease but also emphasizes the significance of early detection and proactive health management.
