James Gunn has recently addressed a viral rumor surrounding the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series, particularly related to a scene featuring characters Yondu, Kraglin, and Broker. The rumor claimed that Michael Rooker, who plays Yondu, improvised a number of lines that led to Gunn breaking character during filming.

In a post on Threads, Gunn unequivocally denied this rumor, stating, “Nope. Both Yondu’s mocking and Kraglin suppressing a smile were scripted.” He clarified that while Rooker’s performance was well-executed, it adhered to the script, and there was no unscripted improvisation involved.

Additionally, Gunn shared some behind-the-scenes insight, revealing that he had to shoot a close-up of Sean Gunn’s character, Kraglin, during pickups. He explained, “So he was actually in front of a blue screen for that shot and we comped in an empty plate of the background from the day. So, yeah, hardly ‘breaking character.’” This detail emphasizes the technical aspects of filmmaking, where “reshoots” often involve necessary adjustments rather than improvised moments.

When asked about instances in which actors genuinely break character, Gunn recounted, “All the time. We ruined takes laughing in Peacemaker nearly every day. But as far as I can remember I’ve never put it in a movie or show!” This indicates the lighthearted atmosphere on set, particularly during his work on “Peacemaker,” showcasing the collaborative spirit that characterizes his projects.

All three films from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise can currently be streamed on Disney+. Meanwhile, Gunn is gearing up for his next venture with DC Studios, titled “Man of Tomorrow,” which is set to be released in July 2027 and will feature David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. This transition from Marvel to DC highlights Gunn’s versatility as a filmmaker and his continued commitment to storytelling in the superhero genre.
