James Franco Takes Center Stage in Twentynine Palms with ‘Desert Films’

Oscar-nominated actor James Franco is set to bring his latest project to Twentynine Palms, California, with two exclusive performances of his work-in-progress titled “Desert Films.” The play, which Franco has written and will star in, offers a surreal exploration of fame, fantasy, and the legacy of Robert Blake.

This artistic endeavor marks the beginning of a creative journey for Franco, as he plans to take the production to larger venues in Los Angeles and New York, with aspirations for Broadway or even a film adaptation in the future. Joining Franco on stage will be actor and producer Blaine Kern III, while the play is co-directed by film director and producer Peter Gold.

The performances, part of a benefit for Theatre 29, are scheduled for 7:00 PM on Saturday, August 23, and 2:30 PM on Sunday, August 24. Proceeds from the event will support production costs and contribute to infrastructure improvements for the community theater, which has been a staple in the area since its founding in 1999. Theatre 29 operates as a non-profit organization, relying on volunteers and donations from the community.

Franco’s connection to Twentynine Palms began earlier this year, while he was involved in a film project in the area. Local entrepreneur Ashton Ramsey introduced him to the theatre’s production of “Man of La Mancha,” which captivated Franco and inspired him to bring his vision to this local stage.

Tickets for this unique theatrical experience are available for $50 each, through the Theatre 29 website or by calling the Box Office at 760-361-4151. Theatre 29 is located at 73637 Sullivan Road in Twentynine Palms. The community expresses gratitude for Franco’s generous support and welcomes further donations to enhance their theater.

This initiative reflects not just a merging of Hollywood and local talent but also highlights the vibrancy of community theater and the potential for growth and recognition for local arts.
