The suspect in the tragic shooting of two Minnesota lawmakers has recently voiced complaints regarding his treatment in jail. Vance Boelter, 57, is accused of fatally shooting Democratic State House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, early on June 14 in their Minneapolis-area home. He is also charged with the attempted murders of Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, after allegedly assaulting them in their nearby residence.
Following a two-day manhunt, Boelter was apprehended near his home and now faces both state and federal charges. During a federal court appearance for a bond and preliminary hearing, Boelter’s attorney, Manvir Atwal, requested a delay, citing alleged poor conditions in jail. Atwal claimed Boelter has been placed on suicide watch and has not had proper sleeping conditions, expressing concerns about close quarters with another disruptive inmate.
Boelter himself told the judge that he had not slept for 12 to 14 days and requested an extension to allow him time to rest. Although he stated he is not suicidal, Atwal asked for him to be moved from suicide watch to solitary confinement for his comfort.
In the wake of the shootings, Boelter’s wife expressed her family’s “appall and horror,” denouncing the violence as a betrayal of their Christian values. Authorities have described the shootings as potentially politically motivated, revealing that Boelter had handwritten notes containing names and addresses of numerous Minnesota state and federal officials.
Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of the Hortman family, who lay in state for public honor following the incident. A beloved pet dog, Gilbert, was also affected in the attack and ultimately had to be euthanized due to injuries sustained from the shooting.
