Jaguars’ London Woes Continue: What’s Next for the Struggling Franchise?

The Jacksonville Jaguars have embarked on their two-week football journey in London, starting with a game against the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Eastern time.

Currently struggling at 1-4, the Jaguars broke their losing streak last week, thanks to a record-setting passing performance by quarterback Trevor Lawrence against the Indianapolis Colts. The Jaguars achieved three plays of 60 or more yards during that game, marking only the second time in franchise history they have accomplished this feat.

Facing them this week are the Bears, holding a record of 3-2 after a decisive victory over the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, a former No. 1 draft pick, has ties to Jacksonville, having trained in the area.

Despite a dismal first half, the Jaguars showed some fight in the second half. After trailing 21-3, Lawrence orchestrated a successful drive capped by a 21-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Davis, cutting the Bears’ lead to 21-10.

However, the Jaguars’ efforts fell short, as they succumbed to the Bears with a final score of 35-16. This defeat marked the Jaguars’ fifth consecutive loss, dropping their record to 1-5 before they face the New England Patriots in another London matchup next week.

Throughout the game, key plays included an interception by Bears defensive back Josh Blackwell, which set up another touchdown, and a blocked field goal attempt by Cairo Santos. Although Lawrence connected with Davis for a second touchdown later, the Jaguars’ inability to capitalize on opportunities and their defensive struggles against Caleb Williams ultimately sealed their fate.

As injuries compounded the Jaguars’ problems, running back Travis Etienne suffered a hamstring injury, raising concerns about his availability moving forward. Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ secondary, already missing player Tyson Campbell, faced further challenges with evaluations for concussions being conducted on Darnell Savage and Jarrian Jones.

The Jaguars’ struggles in pass defense have been a recurring issue this season, drawing attention as they prepare for their subsequent games in London. The team remains in search of answers and improvements as they navigate the remainder of the season.
