Jacob Elordi has embarked on a significant weight-loss journey as he prepares for his role as the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming adaptation of Frankenstein. This transformation, while crucial for the character, has left the Euphoria actor facing considerable physical pain; however, he has discovered that this hardship has inadvertently guided him in deepening his emotional connection to the role.
Elordi, who recently wrapped filming a World War II miniseries, underwent rapid weight loss, resulting in considerable distress. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he shared, “My brain was kind of all over the place. I had these moments of great anguish at around 3 a.m. in the morning. I’d wake, and my body was in such pain. And I just realized that it was a blessing with Frankenstein coming up because I could articulate these feelings, this suffering.”
Instead of shying away from his intense emotions, Elordi channeled them into his performance, which proved especially important as he stepped into the role following Andrew Garfield’s departure from the project earlier this year. With limited preparation time, he turned the exhaustion and discomfort he experienced into a tool for understanding his character’s emotional landscape.
An unexpected motivation arose from a negative comment made about him years prior, suggesting he could only play Frankenstein’s Creature. This critique added a layer of determination to his performance. He recounted, “Someone had written after my first film, ‘The only thing this plank of wood could play is Frankenstein’s Creature. Get him off my screen!’”
In this new incarnation of the classic tale, Elordi shares the screen with acclaimed actor Oscar Isaac, who portrays the titular character. Audiences can look forward to seeing Elordi’s interpretation when Frankenstein is released on Netflix on November 7, 2025. This project not only challenges the actor physically but also offers him a profound opportunity for artistic expression.
