South Dakota State University’s football team faced a tough defeat against North Dakota State, losing 28-21 in the FCS semifinals. Several factors contributed to this loss, including a crucial fumble by Amar Johnson in the second quarter while the Jackrabbits were in the lead at 14-7. This misstep allowed North Dakota State to capitalize on favorable field position and eventually tie the game.
Despite having a chance to score before halftime, South Dakota State opted to take a knee instead of attempting a Hail Mary. Coach Jimmy Rogers explained that this decision was made in consideration of quarterback Mark Gronowski’s arm injury. Gronowski finished the game with 204 passing yards, completing 14 of 25 passes, while also rushing for 15 yards, which highlighted his determination to lead the team despite his physical challenges.
Rogers acknowledged that the team lacked energy and didn’t perform on defense, allowing a season-high 28 points. Gronowski, reflecting on the game, noted that many opportunities slipped through their fingers.
On the contrary, North Dakota State showcased an impressive performance, with standout players Cam Miller and Bryce Lance leading the way. Miller completed 13 of 19 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns, while Lance topped the receiving charts with 125 yards and three touchdown catches, including a remarkable one-handed grab.
Seniors Adam Bock, Amar Johnson, and potentially Mark Gronowski played their final game for the Jackrabbits, expressing their gratitude for their time at South Dakota State. Bock emphasized the profound bond and brotherhood within the team, stating that choosing to play for South Dakota State was the best decision of his life. Coach Rogers highlighted the character of his senior class, noting their commitment to the program, even turning down lucrative offers to stay on the team.
Despite the loss, South Dakota State concluded the season with an impressive 12-2 record, showcasing the potential for future success. The leadership and resilience demonstrated by the players this season foster a hopeful outlook for the program as they rebuild and prepare for next year.
