HONG KONG: Jackie Chan, the iconic action star known for his daring stunts and martial arts prowess, has expressed concerns about the prevalence of computer-generated imagery (CGI) in the film industry, particularly regarding the impact it has on audience perceptions of danger in action scenes. In a recent interview with Haute Living, Chan noted that he feels the art of real-life stunt performance is being overshadowed by the digital effects that can make any action seem safe and effortless.
At 71, Chan reminisced about the days when martial artists executed their stunts without the aid of CGI. He believes that while CGI allows for spectacular visuals that might be impossible to achieve safely in reality, it potentially desensitizes viewers to the inherent risks of real stunts. “It’s a double-edged sword,” he stated, emphasizing that the thrill of authentic danger is often replaced by a false sense of security when audiences witness thrilling feats on screen.
Although Chan is synonymous with high-octane action, he clarified that he remains committed to performing his own stunts, a tradition that has defined his career for over six decades. “Of course, I always do my own stunts. It’s just who I am,” he asserted, further revealing that he has no intention of retiring from this aspect of his work anytime soon. “When you’ve done it for 64 years straight, there’s no physical preparation anymore. Everything is in your heart and soul; it is muscle memory.”
Despite his established career in action films, Chan is eager to expand his horizons beyond this genre. He expressed a desire to take on varied roles, showcasing his versatility as an actor. “I want to be an actor who can handle different roles,” Chan explained. “I’m always trying to break boundaries.”
Reflecting on his filmmaking journey, Chan emphasized the importance of creating engaging content that resonates with audiences. He stated that designing compelling action sequences has always been a priority for him in his commercial films. “I would constantly brainstorm how to design an action sequence to make it more appealing to the audience,” he noted.
Chan’s personal motto of pushing beyond comfort zones reflects his dedication to growth in both his personal and professional life. He believes that authenticity is key in filmmaking, stating, “You can’t make everyone satisfied and happy, so the only thing you can do is be true and honest to yourself.”
Fans can look forward to watching Chan in “Karate Kid: Legends,” which is slated for release in Singapore on June 6. The anticipation surrounding this film further highlights his commitment to evolving as an actor while maintaining his passion for action.
The continued evolution of the film industry, especially with advancements in technology, brings both challenges and new opportunities for actors like Jackie Chan. As he continues to inspire audiences worldwide with his remarkable talent and determination, there’s hope that the essence of real action will endure alongside CGI enhancements.
