Southern California’s beloved bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow, has officially welcomed a new addition to their nest this season. According to the Friends of Big Bear Valley’s livestream, which has attracted thousands of viewers, Jackie laid her first egg around 4:30 p.m. on Friday. More than 14,000 fans tuned in to witness this momentous occasion, marking the start of a much-anticipated nesting season.

In the lead-up to this event, Jackie and Shadow had been busy enhancing their nest, which is perched in a Jeffrey pine overlooking Big Bear Lake. Fans noticed their diligent efforts in “nestorations,” where they brought in fresh sticks and soft materials to prepare for their new arrivals. Jackie laid her first egg last season around the same time, followed by two more in the days that followed, and viewers are eagerly awaiting the sight of more eggs this year.

Jenny Voisard, the media and website manager for Friends of Big Bear Valley, shared insights about the growing community of eagle enthusiasts who were captivated last season when Jackie and Shadow successfully raised two chicks, Sunny and Gizmo. “People are all kind of like nervous aunties and uncles,” Voisard noted, reflecting the emotional investment of fans in the eagles’ journey.

Current nesting season milestones include a new daily record of 28 sticks delivered to the nest in November, surpassing the previous best of 25. Shadow has also been actively participating, evidenced by his contributions of fluff to the nest in early December and notable mating activities shortly after.

A unique behavior called “pancaking” occurs when the eagles flatten themselves in their nest bowl before laying eggs, and this term has become familiar among eagle watchers. Recently, Jackie had her longest pancake session yet, stretching for over half an hour, indicating she is preparing for egg-laying. This behavior is crucial, as it signifies that eggs may be on the horizon, and Jackie may increase her fish consumption to ensure she has the necessary energy for laying.

In the moments leading up to the first egg laying on Friday, spectators noted Jackie making a high-pitched “tea kettle” noise, a behavioral cue that precedes egg arrival, which adds to the excitement of the audience. Observers express awe at Jackie’s regal demeanor during these moments, illustrating the emotional connection between the eagles and their fans.

Despite the excitement, each season is unique with its own challenges. The warm weather last fall and the previous year’s successful rearing of two chicks may result in a delay in this year’s egg-laying timeline. As Voisard emphasizes, it’s essential for fans to remain patient and optimistic. While some seasons have ended in disappointment, with eggs failing to hatch, the community is reminded to cherish the full emotional experience Jackie and Shadow provide.

Fans can expect to witness the duo’s journey unfold and are encouraged to immerse themselves in the joys and uncertainties that come with every new season. Jackie and Shadow continue to inspire their admirers, reminding everyone that whatever happens, they will progress together as a pair.
