The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting iTaukei students, reporting that 2,356 students have benefited from its Early Withdrawal Minors Education Assistance program at the start of this year. This initiative is designed to act as a crucial support system for families during difficult times, as highlighted by Minister for iTaukei Affairs and Chairman of the TLTB Board of Trustees, Ifereimi Vasu.

Over the academic years 2024, 2025, and 2026, a total of 10,025 students have taken advantage of this program. Launched in 2024, the initiative allows families to withdraw a portion of lease funds for minors to cover urgent educational expenses, focusing primarily on primary and secondary education. The remainder of the lease funds is invested until the child reaches the age of 18.

Vasu noted that the program aims to assist families that face challenges in securing financial resources promptly, which can lead to children dropping out of school. “This initiative was introduced to ensure that support is provided at the time our children actually need it,” he emphasized, highlighting the program’s responsiveness to the educational needs of iTaukei families.

The Early Withdrawal Minors Education Assistance program plays a significant role in supplementing government educational initiatives and easing the financial strain on iTaukei households. Vasu affirmed that the scheme ensures that lease funds are used effectively to address critical educational needs, thereby contributing to the reduction of school dropout rates.

Furthermore, Vasu reiterated the importance of education as a cornerstone of Fiji’s long-term socio-economic development. He expressed the Board’s unwavering commitment to providing iTaukei children with ample opportunities for success. Through this initiative, the TLTB aims to enhance the educational experiences of young iTaukei, setting the stage for future generations to flourish. This commitment reflects a hopeful direction for the community, emphasizing the value of education in achieving economic progress and personal growth.
