Italian-American Pride Takes Over NYC: Columbus Day Parade Celebrates 80 Years

The Columbus Day Parade, a prominent celebration of Italian-American heritage in New York City, is set to take place on Monday, October 14. This marks the 80th annual event, which will run along Fifth Avenue from 47th Street to 72nd Street, occurring between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Organized by the Columbus Citizens Foundation, the parade will feature various bands, floats, and marching groups, highlighting the rich Italian-American culture. This year, attendees can look forward to a new float dedicated to the Italian language, alongside the return of the iconic Verrazzano Float, commemorating the 500th anniversary of explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano’s arrival in New York.

Special performances will take place on Fifth Avenue between 68th and 69th Streets, featuring artists such as Natalie Pinto, Chris Ruggiero, Vittorio Di Carlo, Jessa Salerno, and the Italian folk rock band Amici. Lisa Ackerman, executive director of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, expressed excitement about the inclusion of singers on floats, promising a vibrant experience for spectators.

Michael T. Strianese, former CEO of L3 Technologies, will serve as this year’s Grand Marshal. He will be joined by honorees Vivian Cardia and Carmine Di Sibio. The foundation’s president, Christopher Loiacono, encouraged participation from New Yorkers of all backgrounds, underscoring the celebration of Italian-American culture and the community’s contributions.

Over the past 40 years, the Columbus Citizens Foundation has granted $40 million in scholarships to support Italian-American students. Loiacono emphasized the importance of recognizing the achievements of all immigrant communities that contribute to the nation’s diversity and strength.

Viewers can watch the parade live on ABC Channel 7 from noon to 3 p.m., with a team of hosts including Sandra Bookman, Mike Marza, Lauren Glassberg, Joelle Garguilo, and Joe Piscopo. Musical performances will be introduced by Giada Valenti from the red carpet stage.
