The Israeli Government has officially extended an invitation to Fiji to consider sending its soldiers to Gaza for peacekeeping efforts amid the ongoing conflict in the region. This significant announcement was made by the Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, during the welcoming ceremony for the first battalion of the Fiji Infantry Regiment, which has recently returned from a deployment with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) at Black Rock Camp in Votualevu.

Minister Tikoduadua discussed the weight of the decision facing the Fijian Government, emphasizing that it will require careful consideration due to the violence currently affecting the Israeli-Gaza region. He stated, “This is something that Government will need to decide on. It’s not going to be an easy decision. If it happens, we have to stand firm and be prepared to go.”

While there are no confirmations about troop deployment, Tikoduadua articulated his confidence in the readiness and capability of Fijian soldiers to take on such peacekeeping roles if called upon. He encouraged the troops to cherish their time at home with their families and express their gratitude for a safe return.

Additionally, the Minister acknowledged the leadership and senior officers who oversaw the UNAMI mission, highlighting their vital responsibility during deployments. He remarked, “As a leader, your greatest responsibility is to bring every soldier home alive and well,” demonstrating appreciation for their dedication to ensuring the safety of their troops.

This invitation to potentially participate in peacekeeping in Gaza underscores Fiji’s commitment to international peacekeeping initiatives while placing a strong emphasis on the welfare of its soldiers and their connections to the community. Such a proactive approach not only reflects Fiji’s readiness to contribute to global stability but also prioritizes the safety and well-being of its service members.
