MILAN — Team USA’s figure skating team celebrated a gold medal performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics, but not without facing unexpected challenges. Following the medal ceremony on February 8, some U.S. skaters encountered issues with their skates, which had been damaged due to the conditions of the podium.

According to an anonymous source familiar with the situation, the medal podium lacked a carpet or protective cover, resulting in scratches and potential damage to the blades of the skates. Typically, skaters utilize skate guards when off the ice to prevent such damage, but the medalists were left without this protection after performing jumps on the podium.

While the severity and specifics of the damage remain unclear, any issues with skate blades can create significant concerns for skaters. If blades are compromised, it may necessitate a switch to new skates, a daunting prospect that can take considerable time to adjust to, especially during such a crucial event.

As the competition continues, the ice dance pairs are set to perform on February 9, and Team USA will be hoping for smooth sailing in the remaining events. Despite the podium predicament, the determination and talent of the skaters shine through, reminding fans of the spirit of the Olympic Games.
