The New York Islanders made a strategic move on Tuesday by acquiring forward Matt Luff from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Julien Gauthier. Both players were in the American Hockey League (AHL) at the time of the trade and will report directly to their new affiliates without the need to go through waivers.
Matt Luff, 28, has had limited opportunities with the Blues this season, playing in just five games and managing to score once, along with a -2 rating. Head coach Jim Montgomery primarily utilized Luff in a fourth-line role, resulting in an average ice time of only 9:08 per game, the lowest of his career. His previous call-up in December represented his first NHL action since the 2022-23 season when he played for the Detroit Red Wings.
In contrast, Luff has excelled in the AHL, appearing in 321 games over the past decade with various teams, including the Kings, Predators, Red Wings, Panthers, and Blues. His production has been impressive, averaging 0.78 points per game, and he has been particularly effective recently, with 14 goals and 39 points in just 42 games this season with the Springfield Thunderbirds. With his NHL experience, Luff will not only provide a much-needed boost to Bridgeport’s roster but also serve as valuable call-up insurance for the Isles, especially as he heads towards unrestricted free agency this summer.
On the other hand, Julien Gauthier will be seeking a fresh start with the Blues as he joins his fifth NHL organization. The 28-year-old, standing at 6’4″, was initially drafted 21st overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2016. His career has seen him move through several teams, including a trade to the New York Rangers and ultimately making his way to the Islanders. Throughout his tenure with New York, Gauthier has struggled with injuries, appearing in just 28 NHL games and 40 AHL games, accumulating a total of 68 appearances over the last three years.
This trade presents a new opportunity for both players to revitalize their careers. With Luff expected to bolster Bridgeport’s scoring as they guide their playoff push, Gauthier will have the chance to prove himself with St. Louis, following a challenging period in New York. Overall, this trade reflects the ongoing efforts of both organizations to build competitive rosters ahead of key points in the season.
