Is Your Fiji Home Ready for Festive Season Fire Safety?

The National Fire Authority (NFA) is urging the public to prioritize safety as they prepare for the festive season. NFA CEO Sowane Puamau emphasized that safety should always take precedence, particularly during celebrations that may heighten fire risks. He called on all Fijians to celebrate responsibly, ensuring fire safety in and around their homes and supervising children closely.

Recent trends indicate that electrical faults have emerged as the leading cause of fires in Fiji, making it crucial for households to use electrical appliances wisely and avoid overloading power points. This warning comes in light of data showing a significant number of fire incidents during festive periods, with 152 structural fires reported from January to September this year alone, resulting in damages of approximately $20.2 million.

Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, echoed Puamau’s concerns, stating that fire safety begins with individual responsibility. He urged residents to meet basic fire safety standards when constructing or renovating their homes, suggesting they consult the NFA for guidance and install essential fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers.

The NFA is determined to ensure that the festive season remains joyful and safe. They recommend that families regularly discuss fire emergency procedures so that all members know how to respond in case of a fire. Together, the NFA and the Ministry are reminding Fijians that safe celebrations lead to happy moments, and that small precautions can prevent tragic outcomes during this festive time.

By embracing a culture of fire safety and remaining vigilant, the community can look forward to celebrating with joy while minimizing risks associated with fire.
