The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a pivotal offseason after their recent playoff exit, prompting discussions about potential trades involving key players. Among the names being floated is that of standout edge rusher T.J. Watt. Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport recently suggested that the Steelers might consider a surprising trade, involving Watt and a 2027 third-round draft pick being sent to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a first-round pick in 2027.

Davenport points out that trading Watt, a player historically regarded as untouchable in Pittsburgh, may not be as far-fetched as it once seemed. After an injury-plagued season, during which he recorded 55 tackles, seven sacks, and two interceptions across 14 games, there are questions about his long-term value, especially considering he will turn 32 this October. Additionally, with fellow edge rusher Nick Herbig entering a contract year, the Steelers may be assessing their future strategy.

Watt, who inked a three-year, $123 million contract extension last summer, typically exceeds expectations in terms of production. However, after a season that delivered fewer sacks than usual, the Steelers might find themselves in a position to negotiate. The 49ers are currently seeking to strengthen their pass rush, which could make them a viable trade partner desperate enough to give up a valuable first-round pick.

One significant aspect of this proposed trade involves the financial implications for Pittsburgh. Davenport explains that if the Steelers were to wait until after June 1 to execute a trade, the cap savings for the team could increase dramatically—from $12 million to $32 million in 2026. This raises the question of whether the additional cap space is worth delaying the acquisition of a first-round draft pick.

Pittsburgh currently boasts around $40 million in salary cap space heading into the offseason, which presents them with several options. If they are inclined to move Watt, securing a high draft pick this year might serve their interests better, allowing them to address needs in the upcoming draft.

As rumors continue to swirl, the Steelers’ fan community remains engaged, eager for updates and insights as the team navigates this critical period in its rebuilding phase. The potential for change looms large, with the possibility of either retaining a homegrown star or capitalizing on his market value to secure future talent.
