Google has raised the prices of its latest Pixel phones, introducing the most expensive models yet. The new Pixel 9 series includes the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL, with many users questioning whether to upgrade, especially those who own the Pixel 8 Pro.
Despite possessing the Pixel 8 Pro for nearly a year, there’s little incentive for many to switch to the more expensive Pro versions, particularly the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which is generally considered a direct upgrade. Instead, many are favoring the standard Pixel 9 for its value.
The new Pixel phones showcase a year-over-year price increase, marking a rare occurrence in Google’s history. While the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL may be receiving a lot of attention, the standard Pixel 9 is seen as the standout option.
The Pixel 9 is powered by the same Tensor G4 chip as its Pro counterparts, ensuring comparable performance. Although it comes with 12GB of RAM—less than the 16GB found in the Pro models—this is likely to impact multitasking capabilities rather than overall functionality.
While the Pixel 9 does not offer a year of free access to Gemini Live like the Pro versions, it includes many of the latest AI photo editing tools unveiled at the recent Made by Google event. Features like Add Me, Pixel Studio, and Reimagine enhance photo editing, but it lacks certain video features exclusive to the Pro models.
Notably, the Pixel 9 shares the same 50MP main camera and 48MP ultrawide camera as the Pro models, utilizing the same sensor technology. While it does not include a telephoto camera, users can expect strong performance from its main camera with effective pixel binning allowing for decent zoom capabilities.
In terms of design, the Pixel 9 features flatter edges and a redesigned camera bar while maintaining the same durability standards as the Pro models, including an IP68 rating. Though the design may appear less premium than the Pro, it does not compromise on build quality.
One of the most significant considerations for buyers is the cost. The Pixel 9 starts at $799, $100 above last year’s Pixel 8, while the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL are priced at $999 and $1,099, respectively. The $200 price difference gives the Pixel 9 a competitive edge, especially for consumers looking for a balance between performance and cost. With both models starting at 128GB of storage, many will be watching closely to see how the battery life compares in upcoming reviews.
