Is the Pixel 9 the Smart Choice Amid Price Hikes?

Google has taken a significant step by raising the prices of its new Pixel phones, introducing the most expensive models to date. Although experiencing an entire year with the Pixel 8 Pro, I find myself hesitant to upgrade to either the Pixel 9 Pro or the Pixel 9 Pro XL, particularly the latter, which serves as the true successor to the Pixel 8 Pro. For those debating which new Pixel phone to choose, I am currently favoring the standard Pixel 9.

Year-over-year price increases are not common, yet Google has implemented this adjustment with its new lineup. I believe the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are overrated, making the Pixel 9 the standout option this time. Here’s why.

Don’t overlook the Pixel 9 simply because it lacks the ‘Pro’ label. In my comparison of the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, I highlighted that the so-called ‘lesser’ Pixel 9 is equipped with the same Tensor G4 chip present in the pricier models. This is not a variant or a previous generation’s chip, similar to Apple’s approach with standard iPhone models.

I am curious to explore any performance differences among the three models, as the Pixel 9 should theoretically perform just as well. It does come with 12GB of RAM, compared to the 16GB in the Pro variants. This RAM difference might impact the Pixel 9’s ability to keep apps in memory for quicker access without reloading.

While the Pixel 9 does not receive a year of free access to Gemini Live like its more expensive counterparts, it does come with the same suite of new AI-assisted photo editing tools unveiled at the Made by Google event. Users will enjoy new features, including Add Me, Pixel Studio, and Reimagine. The only exceptions are Video Boost, Night Sight Video, and Super Res Zoom Video, which are dedicated to video recording.

With Pixel Studio, users can create unique sketches and images by describing their concept in a text box within the app. It is impressive how quickly the feature generates images that closely align with the provided request.

The Pixel 9 also includes the same augmented reality features from the new Add Me functionality, which allows users to capture photos that include themselves in the shot.

Examining the specifications, you’ll find that the Pixel 9 is equipped with the same 50MP main camera and 48MP ultrawide camera as the higher-end Pro models. The ultrawide camera utilizes the same 1/2.55-inch sensor and offers a 123-degree field of view. Unless Google employs entirely different image processing algorithms for the Pro devices, we can expect similar results from the Pixel 9.

Although it lacks a telephoto lens, the Pixel 9’s main camera can still produce reasonable telephoto images. Previous devices, like last year’s Pixel 8, effectively utilized pixel binning to provide zoom capabilities without needing a dedicated telephoto lens. I anticipate that the Pixel 9 could capture decent images at 2x or 3x zoom.

In terms of design, the Pixel 9 features flatter edges and a redesigned camera bar. However, all three models in this lineup share the same IP68 rating for durability.

The construction includes an aluminum frame and Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2, ensuring solid protection. While I personally prefer the matte finish of the Pro models over the glossy look of the Pixel 9, the design of the Pixel 9 is still high-quality and feature-rich at a lower price point.

Despite my frustration with the price hikes, it’s noteworthy that the Pixel 9 remains the most affordable option, starting at $799, compared to last year’s Pixel 8 at $699. This marks the second consecutive year of price increases, yet the Pixel 9 is still cheaper than the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, which start at $999 and $1,099, respectively.

With a $200 difference between the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro, the cheaper model offers significant savings, especially considering both come with 128GB of storage. I look forward to reviewing the upcoming battery performance, as unless the Pixel 9 Pro significantly outperforms its sibling, it may not offer enough justification for the price disparity.
