OpenAI is emerging as a frontrunner in the quest to achieve human-level artificial intelligence, reportedly just four steps away from reaching this milestone.
The company recently outlined a five-level system to monitor its progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), which it shared with employees. This system ranges from the current capabilities of conversational AI to AI that can perform tasks equivalent to those of an entire organization. OpenAI plans to share these levels with investors and external stakeholders as well.
According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the company believes it is currently at the first level but is on the verge of reaching level two. This next level, termed “Reasoners,” describes AI capable of basic problem-solving, comparable to a human with a doctorate but without access to tools. The third level, called “Agents,” refers to AI that can perform various actions on behalf of its user for several days. The fourth level, “Innovators,” represents AI that can aid in the development of new inventions.
OpenAI executives also demonstrated a research project involving GPT-4, which showcased the model’s human-like reasoning abilities. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing an anonymous source familiar with the situation. OpenAI declined to provide further comments.
The five-level system was created by OpenAI’s executives and leaders, who can modify the levels based on feedback from employees, investors, and the company’s board.
In May, OpenAI disbanded its “Superalignment” team, which focused on addressing the existential dangers posed by AI. The responsibilities of this team have since been integrated into other research initiatives within the company.
